Hammertoe Treatment
Hammertoe Care and Correction
Relief for Toe Pain, Corns, and Shoe Irritation
A hammertoe is a toe that bends at the middle joint, often due to muscle imbalance, tight footwear, or underlying deformities such as bunions. Early on the toe may still be flexible. Over time it can become rigid and form painful corns on the top or tip of the toe, making shoes difficult to wear and walking uncomfortable.

We begin with a focused exam and, when needed, digital X-rays to assess flexibility and joint health. Conservative care may include shoe changes with a roomier toe box, protective padding, gel sleeves, toe spacers, taping or splinting, targeted stretching and strengthening, custom orthotics to correct pressure and mechanics, and treatment of painful corns or calluses. Anti-inflammatory therapies help reduce irritation, and we address contributing issues to slow progression.
If pain persists or the toe becomes rigid, we discuss procedural options that match your activity level and goals. Choices can include soft tissue releases to rebalance tendons for flexible deformities or outpatient procedures such as arthroplasty or fusion for fixed toes, sometimes with small implants or temporary pins. We guide you through recovery with offloading, gradual return to shoes, and prevention strategies to protect alignment and reduce the chance of recurrence.
